Introduction Emotional Awareness and Creativity
Continuing on from last year's dialogues series about mental health & creativity, Sam Potter (Late Of The Pier, Domino Publishing) & Florence Jimenez Otto bring you a special presentation on how to feel good working in music on Wed 20th March.
When: Wed 20th March, 18:00
Where: CoMingle, dBs Berlin
FB: www.facebook.com/events/711056555958417
Breaking down issues you may face in being a musician and working in a creative industry, Florence & Sam will explain what is happening on a psychological and physiological level with certain conditions. From here they will give you a tool kit to help relieve pressures, to manage better your stresses and gain a clearer awareness of yourself and your practice.
This lecture will help you reconnect to your sensory systems, drawing on techniques from mindfulness, deep listening and the potential of group exercises. Inspired by David Lynch and Pauline Oliveros they will help you find new ways into your imagination and out of stress. From having a better understanding of your inner weather you can become more in control of your everyday life and more masterful over the nuances of your craft.
// Sam Potter:
Sam Potter is a musician, artist and author based in Berlin. His work looks at helping people reconnect to the emotional properties of sound. ‘Ecstatic Data Sets’ his recent book for Rough Trade explores emerging technology’s role in helping us better understand who we are through music and led to him speaking at The Science Museum about the future of entertainment with *Jarvis Cocker* hosting. At The Barbican Centre and Oval Space his Blackout night saw artists like Mica Levi play anonymously in the pitch black. Potter is also a creative consultant with MONOM, Domino Recording Company and Franz Ferdinand amongst his clients. Potter was a founding member of cult band Late Of The Pier and is signed to Domino Publishing.
// Florence Otto
Florence Jimenez Otto originally studied sociology and psychology before her passion for electronic music brought her to Berlin. Over the last eight years she has worked in public relations, artist and project management for various artists, labels and festivals — e.g. the vinyl distributor Word and Sound, for one of the Berghain resident DJ’s or the David Bowie exhibition in Berlin. She was highly interested in mental wellbeing, especially in the music industry, as she saw various artists and colleagues struggling with exhaustion, fear of missing out, anxiety or burnout. Creating, consuming and working with music is fun, interesting and highly dynamic but working in the music industry can have negative impacts on mental wellbeing. After so much time having worked in public relations, she has decided to complement her knowledge in psychology with an intense training in systemic coaching. Systemic coaching as a portfolio of techniques of counselling helps people to identify problems and crises and encourages them to take positive steps to resolve these issues. She is now giving counselling and mental support to people of the entertainment and creative business.
